Flooding Leads to Deadly Accidents in South Africa

An area of low pressure and an associated cold front brought wet, windy and chilly weather to southwestern South Africa on Thursday, including Cape Town, the second most populous city of the country.

Many areas received an inch or more of rain, including Vyeboom, where 2.13 inches fell in 24 hours.

The intensity of the rainfall lead to numerous flooding problems across the region which resulted in flooded homes and several accidents on area roadways. Accidents related to the unsettled weather resulted in the deaths of three people.

Another angle to this storm is the large surf it has produced along the southern coastline of South Africa where waves over 15 feet will be possible through Saturday.

This part of the world is known for having big waves and often draws some of the top surfers in the world. This will be the case in early July when Ballito, South Africa, hosts the Association of Surfing Professionals. More than 20 of the top 30 surfers in the world are expected to attend the event.
