If Russia's essential Soyuz rockets remain grounded beyond mid-November, there will be no way to launch any more astronauts before the current residents are supposed to leave, said NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini. (AP) ? Astronauts may need to take the unprecedented step of temporarily abandoning the International Space Station if last week's Russian launch accident prevents new crews from flying there this fall.

Until officials figure out what went wrong with Russia's essential Soyuz rockets, there will be no way to launch any more astronauts before the current residents have to leave in mid-November.

The unsettling predicament comes just weeks after NASA's final space shuttle flight.

"We have plenty of options," NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini, assured reporters Monday. "We'll focus on crew safety as we always do."

Abandoning the space station, even for a short period, would be an unpleasant last resort for the world's five space agencies that have spent decades working on the project. Astronauts have been living aboard the space station since 2000, and the goal is to keep it going until 2020.

Suffredini said flight controllers could keep a deserted space station operating indefinitely, as long as all major systems are working properly. The risk to the station goes up, however, if no one is on board to fix equipment breakdowns.

Six astronauts from three countries presently are living on the orbiting complex. Three are due to leave next month; the other three are supposed to check out in mid-November.

The Sept. 22 launch of the very next crew ? the first to fly in this post-shuttle era ? already has been delayed indefinitely. Russia's Soyuz spacecraft have been the sole means of getting full-time station residents up and down for two years.

To keep the orbiting outpost with a full staff of six for as long as possible, the one American and two Russians due to return to Earth on Sept. 8 will remain on board at least an extra week.

As for supplies, the space station is well stocked and could go until next summer, Suffredini said. Atlantis dropped off a year's supply of goods just last month on the final space shuttle voyage. The unmanned craft destroyed Wednesday was carrying 3 tons of supplies.

For now, operations are normal in orbit, Suffredini noted, and the additional week on board for half the crew will mean additional science research.

The Soyuz has been extremely reliable over the decades; this was the first failure in 44 Russian supply hauls for the space station. Even with such a good track record, many in and outside NASA were concerned about retiring the space shuttles before a replacement was ready to fly astronauts.

Russian space officials have set up an investigation team and until it comes up with a cause for the accident and a repair plan, the launch and landing schedules remain in question. None of the spacecraft debris has been recovered yet; the wreckage fell into a remote, wooded section of Siberia. The third stage malfunctioned; a sudden loss of pressure apparently was noted between the engine and turbopump.

While a crew may well have survived such an accident because of safety precautions built into the manned version of the rocket, no one wants to take any chances.

One or two unmanned Soyuz launches are on tap for October, one commercial and the other another space station supply run. Those would serve as important test flights before putting humans on board, Suffredini said.

NASA considered vacating the space station before, following the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. Back then, shuttles were still being used to ferry some station residents back and forth. Instead, the station got by with two-man crews for three years because of the significant cutback in supplies.

The space station's population doubled in 2009, to six. It wasn't until the space station was completed this year that science research finally took priority.

Even if the space shuttles still were flying, space station crews still would need Soyuz-launched capsules to serve as lifeboats, Suffredini said. The capsules are certified for no more than 6? months in space, thus the need to regularly rotate crews. Complicating matters is the need to land the capsules during daylight hours in Kazakhstan, resulting in weeks of blackout periods.

NASA wants American private companies to take over crew hauls, but that's three to five years away at best. Until then, Soyuz capsules are the only means of transporting astronauts to the space station.

Japan and Europe have their own cargo ships and rockets, for unmanned use only. Commercial front-runner Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, plans to launch a space station supply ship from Cape Canaveral at the end of November. That would be put on hold if no one is on board to receive the vessel.

Suffredini said he hasn't had time to consider the PR impact of abandoning the space station, especially coming so soon after the end of the 30-year shuttle program.

"Flying safely is much, much more important than anything else I can think about right this instant," he said. "I'm sure we'll have an opportunity to discuss any political implications if we spend a lot of time on the ground. But you know, we'll just have to deal with them because we're going to do what's safest for the crew and for the space station."

The Best Way to Balance Motherhood and Work

I have discovered that walks in the park with my hubby and baby girl riding in her Stokke Xplory is a great way to spend family time together and alleviate stress from working, being a mommy and committed wife.

Generally, being a mommy is wearisome for almost any young woman, but more so for women who are working. It?s inconsequential if the mom is working full-time or part time, working will surely take a heavy toll on any mother. Balancing your work life and being a mommy is really hard, however it is very possible. The real key step to being a successful working mommy is to put some sense of balance in this circumstance.

Sensations of guilt can be a big obstacle when juggling work with maternity, being a spouse, and being a mom who takes good care of her youngsters. The primary thing you have to do when you come home from work is shed yourself of any guilt you could feel. It is a fact that most ladies will need to work, particularly now during these tough periods when one income is sometimes not enough to raise a family well. Moms should also discover ways to add supplemental income to that of her husband?s as this is healthier for both parties.

You and your hubby must be in continuous communication with one another to be certain you?re on the same page when it comes to looking after your baby. Nurturing your kid and taking care of your home and the finances should be cleverly planned. The daddy should also partake in the responsibility of taking care of the child?not only his financial part. Dad should also ensure that you have sufficient time to look after yourself, too.

If your work is giving you too much stress, there are ways you can ease that stress and spend some more time with your baby at the same time. You can ask the company you are working for if it is easy for you to telecommute, or to work from home more often and just report to work when needed. This will give you more time to take your baby out for daily strolls in your favorite Stokke Xplory or Bugaboo Cameleon. There are companies out there that may be really understanding of these circumstances and would give you a chance to do so.

You and your hubby should be mindful of the well being of your child, not just yourselves. Your man, (or the father of the child) should be really engaged in raising your baby. It will be best to coordinate working hours with your employer that will enable you to spend longer with your youngster, particularly in his or her early years.

Regina Johnson has always loved writing and strolling with her babies in their Bugaboo Bee, Bugaboo Cameleon or Stokke Xplory in the park. On her site she has got many more stroller reviews and articles.

Japan's Finance Minister Noda to be new PM (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda was chosen on Monday to become Japan's sixth prime minister in five years, but has to overcome a divided parliament and deep rifts in the ruling party if he is to make more of a mark than his predecessors.

Noda is considered a safe pair of hands to lead the world's third-biggest economy but doubts run deep as to whether he will have sufficient support and stay in office long enough to tackle a long list of economic woes and cope with a nuclear crisis.

The 54-year-old Noda, who defeated Trade Minister Banri Kaieda in a run-off vote in the ruling party, must deal with a resurgent yen that threatens exports, forge a new energy policy while ending the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl, and find funds to rebuild from the March 11 tsunami at a time when huge public debt has already triggered a credit downgrade.

"Noda has inherited all the same problems -- a divided parliament, a divided party, a strong yen, a Tohoku (northeastern Japan) desperate for progress on reconstruction and an early end to the nuclear crisis," said Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple University's Japan campus.

"I think the honeymoon will be very short-lived."

No Japanese prime minister has lasted much more than a year since 2006 and most market players polled by Reuters this month thought the next government head would be no exception.

Noda, who will be confirmed by parliament on Tuesday, will be the third premier since his ruling Democratic Party of Japan swept to power in 2009, promising change.

Instead of a deep debate over how to jolt Japan out of decades of stagnation, the party vote had turned into a battle between allies and critics of Ichiro Ozawa, a 69-year-old political mastermind who heads the party's biggest group even as he faces trial on charges of misreporting political donations.

Kaieda, backed by Ozawa, got 177 votes in the run-off while Noda, supported by Ozawa critics, won the backing of 215 deputies.

Analysts said despite the defeat of his candidate, Ozawa remained a powerful -- and divisive -- force.

"He is still important, though not as important as he was," Temple University's Kingston said.

CHINA, U.S. TIES

Noda's rise to the top job could cause some friction with China after he recently repeated that Japanese wartime leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal after Japan's defeat in World War Two were not "war criminals" under domestic law.

He has also said China's rapid military buildup and expanding naval activities pose a serious regional risk, and stressed the importance of the U.S.-Japan security alliance.

"Noda's attitude toward China has in the past been somewhat hardline, and he has close relations with the United States, which would not bode well for China-Japan ties," said Sun Cheng, an expert on Japan at the China University of Political Science and Law.

"However, he has been compromising on his views, and I think he will want to maintain stability in China-Japan relations," Sun added.

Bond markets welcomed the choice of Noda, who among the candidates was the only one consistently calling for Japan to face painful reforms to curb its massive debt.

"Let's do the utmost to tackle what we have promised and if there's not enough money, we might ask the people to share the burden," Noda said before the vote.

The finance minister, who knocked out telegenic former foreign minister Seiji Maehara -- the favorite of ordinary voters -- in the first round, injected a rare moment of levity into the tense event.

The jowly, stocky lawmaker compared himself to a "dojo" loach fish -- an eel-like inhabitant of the deep.

"I do look like this and if I become prime minister, the support rate would not rise, so I would not call a snap election. A loach has its own abilities even though it cannot do as a goldfish does."

Noda has said Japan should not build new atomic reactors, effectively phasing out nuclear power over 40 years. But he wants to restart off-line reactors after safety checks to avoid a power crunch. Japan relied on atomic power for about 30 percent of its electricity before the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

One of Noda's first challenges will be seeking opposition help in parliament, where it controls the upper house and can block legislation. He has floated the idea of a "grand coalition" with opposition rivals -- although the two biggest opposition groups have been cool.

Gadhafi forces killed detainees, survivors say (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? Retreating loyalists of Moammar Gadhafi killed scores of detainees and arbitrarily shot civilians over the past week, as rebel forces extended their control over the Libyan capital, survivors and a human rights group said Sunday.

In one case, Gadhafi fighters opened fire and hurled grenades at more than 120 civilians huddling in a hangar used as a makeshift lockup near a military base, said Mabrouk Abdullah, 45, who escaped with a bullet wound in his side. Some 50 charred corpses were still scattered across the hangar on Sunday.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said the evidence it has collected so far "strongly suggests that Gadhafi government forces went on a spate of arbitrary killing as Tripoli was falling." The justice minister in the rebels' interim government, Mohammed al-Alagi, said the allegations would be investigated and leaders of Gadhafi's military units put on trial.

So far, there have been no specific allegations of atrocities carried out by rebel fighters, though human rights groups are continuing to investigate some unsolved cases.

AP reporters have witnessed several episodes of rebels mistreating detainees or sub-Saharan Africans suspected of being hired Gadhafi guns. Earlier this week, rebels and their supporters did not help eight wounded men, presumably Gadhafi fighters, who were stranded in a bombed out fire station in Tripoli's Abu Salim neighborhood, some pleading for water.

Najib Barakat, the health minister in the rebels' interim government, said Sunday that he does not yet have a death toll for the weeklong battle for Tripoli. Hundreds have died and more bodies, some in advanced stages of decay, are still being retrieved from the streets.q

Barakat said efforts are being made to identify bodies. At the least, the corpses of suspected Gadhafi fighters, especially non-Libyans, are being photographed before burial, to allow for possible future identification by relatives.

In fighting late Sunday, pro-Gadhafi elements fired Grad rockets at rebel forces gathering in the town of Nawfaliyah, not far from Gadhafi's home town of Sirte, rebels said.

Rebels gave residents there 10 days to allow rebel forces in peacefully or face an assault. A rebel spokesman said many Gadhafi loyalists have fled to Sirte and are preparing for a fierce battle.

Rebels rode into Tripoli a week ago, then fought fierce battles with Gadhafi forces, especially at the former Libyan leader's Bab al-Aziziya compound and the Abu Salim neighborhood, a regime stronghold.

As the rebels consolidated their control and Gadhafi fighters fled, reports of atrocities began emerging over the weekend.

Human Rights Watch said it has evidence indicating regime troops killed at least 17 detainees in an improvised lockup, a building of Libya's internal security service, in the Gargur neighborhood of Tripoli. A doctor who examined the corpses said about half had been shot in the back of the head and that abrasions on ankles and wrists suggested they had been bound.

The group spoke to Osama Al-Swayi who had been detained there, along with 24 others.

On Aug. 21, detainees heard rebels advancing and shouting "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great" he told Human Rights Watch.

"We were so happy, and we knew we would be released soon," he said. "Snipers were upstairs; then they came downstairs and started shooting. An old man (and another person) were shot outside our door. (The rest of us) ran out because they opened the door and said, "Quickly, quickly, go out."

He said the soldiers told them to lie on the ground. He said he heard one soldier saying, "Just finish them off." Four soldiers fired at the detainees.

"I was near the corner and got hit in the right hand, the right foot and the right shoulder. In one instant, they finished off all the people with me. ... No one was breathing. Some of them had head wounds," he told the rights group.

Gadhafi forces set up another detention center in a hangar near their Yarmouk military base in southern Tripoli.

Abdullah, who was at the hangar Sunday, said he had survived a massacre there last week. He said he had been detained in the city of Zlitan to the east on Aug. 16 and was brought to the hangar with other civilian captives. All were beaten and tortured, he said.

"They didn't even ask us questions," he said, "They just beat us and called us rats."

On Tuesday, he said, more than 120 prisoners were in the hangar when a soldier told them they'd be released at dusk, Abdullah said. A short time later, guards hurled hand grenades inside, then opened fire. He was shot and wounded in his side, but fled the hanger. He hid outside when soldiers returned and fired on other survivors. When they left, he escaped.

Ahmed Mohammed, 25, also said he survived the massacre and told a similar story. Neither knew how many had been killed nor how and when the bodies had been burned.

Amnesty International spoke to another survivor, Hussein al-Lafi, who said three of his brothers were killed that day.

"They (the guards) immediately opened fire, and I saw one of them holding a hand grenade. Seconds later, I heard an explosion, followed by four more. I fell on the ground face down. Others fell on top of me and I could feel their warm blood ... People were screaming and there were many more rounds of fire."

On Wednesday, guards at a Gadhafi military base in the Tripoli suburb of Qasr Ben Ghashir shot dead five prisoners held in solitary confinement, Amnesty said, citing survivors. Other detainees panicked and broke out of their cells when they heard the shots, survivors said. By that time, the guards had fled, the report said.

In addition to the killings at detention centers, Human Rights Watch said it collected testimony about Gadhafi soldiers randomly shooting civilians. In one incident, on Wednesday, medical lab technician Salah Kikli said he saw Gadhafi fighters pull two unarmed men, including one in medical scrubs, from an ambulance and kill them.

Al-Alagi, the justice minister, said the reported atrocities did not come as a surprise because the regime acted in a brutal manner in the past. He said that the justice system would have to be "cleansed" before investigations can begin.

It remains unclear who is responsible for some of the other killings, including of dozens of dark-skinned men whose bodies were found in two areas of Tripoli.

Reporters saw bodies in advanced stages of decomposition at Abu Salim hospital, including in the parking lot, a ward and in the basement. Barakat, the health minister, said a total of 75 corpses were found at the hospital.

Another group of bodies was strewn across a roundabout near Bab al-Aziziya, Gadhafi's compound. Five were in a field clinic, housed in a tent, and one of the corpses still had an IV sticking in his right arm.

Human Rights Watch counted a total of 29 bodies in that area, where Gadhafi loyalists, many from sub-Saharan Africa, had camped out in recent months. The group said it was not yet clear who was responsible for the deaths.

Some rebel fighters have mistreated detainees, pushing or hitting them, though others have tried to stop abuse. In many cases, wounded rebels and regime fighters were treated side-by-side in rebel-controlled hospitals.

On Sunday, in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, rebels apprehended a dozen black men and accused them of being mercenaries in Gadhafi's army. The detainees were occasionally punched before one of the rebels convinced his comrades the men were just migrant workers.

William Osas, a 32-year-old Nigerian, said he and other Africans had fled to a farm nearby to escape the fighting, and the men were detained while they were looking for food. Reporters from The Associated Press visited the farm and found hundreds of Africans living there, including many women.

Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05

The Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 ($99.99 direct) is one of those rare products that does more than you might expect. Not only does it scan both photographic prints and 35mm film, but it does the job surprisingly well. Serious photographers will want higher resolution and more control over settings, but the PanScn05 may be precisely the scanner that a casual, consumer-level photographer with boxes of photos they want to get onto their computer has been searching for.

The PanScn05 shares a number of key features with the similarly named Pandigital Personal Photo Scanner/Converter PanScn06 ($149.99 direct, 3.0 stars) that I reviewed last year. The key differences between the two are, first, that the PanScn05 is limited to a maximum 4- by 6-inch scan size, rather than letter size, and second, it adds film scanning, which lets it scan unmounted 35mm slides as well as strips of film. It's this second difference that makes the PanScn05 particularly worthy of attention.

Setup and Scanning
The PanScn05 is a small manual-feed scanner, just 1.7 by 6.2 by 2.7 inches (HWD) with a 4-inch-wide feed slot in the front and a straight-through path to the exit in the back. Also on the back is a memory card slot and both power and USB connectors.

The scanner comes with a 1 GB MicroSD card and an adaptor for the scanner's card slot. Setup consists of plugging in the card and connecting the power cable. You can then turn the scanner on and either put a photo in the slot or snap in a small film guide and put film in the guide. Either way, the scanner will feed the photo, scan it, and save the scan as a JPG file. In the case of film, it will auto-detect whether it's positive (a slide) or negative, and it will find each frame on a strip to scan to a separate file.

After you've scanned an image to the memory card, you can move the card to your computer, or plug in the supplied USB cable, let your computer recognize the card as a drive, and then copy the files. Still another choice, once you've installed a utility from the card, is to tell the scanner to scan directly to your hard drive when you're connected to the computer.

Aside from the one utility, Pandigital supplies no software and no way to change any scan settings except for resolution. In addition to turning power on and off, the scanner's one button can switch between 300 pixels per inch (ppi) and 600 ppi for prints. Film, however, always scans at the scanner's 1,200 ppi optical resolution. Note that anything over 300 ppi is overkill for prints unless you plan to enlarge them. However, the 1,200 ppi for film is a little low for printing photos at anything much larger than 4 by 6 inches.

Speed and Quality
Speed for manual-feed scanners isn't very meaningful, because it doesn't include the time you spend on the manual feed. With prints, you'll probably want to protect the originals by putting each one in the plastic sleeve that Pandigital provides, and with both prints and film you need to take the time to carefully feed the original so it goes in straight. That said, the speed came out to 10 seconds in my tests for a 4 by 6 at 300 ppi and 17 seconds for scanning one frame of film. Both are fast enough so they won't try your patience. As a point of comparison, the Plustek SmartPhoto P60 ($90 street, 2.5 stars) took 21 seconds to scan a 4 by 6 at 300 ppi.

More important than the speed is that the scans are high enough quality to be worth having. More serious photographers probably won't settle for 1,200 ppi resolution for slides, and, in this price range, would probably be happier with an inexpensive flatbed like the Editors' Choice Epson Perfection V300 Photo ($99.99 direct, 4 stars). However, the quality for both prints and slides should pass muster for casual photographers who aren't likely to print photos at larger than 5 by 7 inches.

Other Issues
If you go to the Pandigital Web site, you might notice that the Kodak P460 Personal Photo Scanner ($109.99 direct, 4 stars), which is also sold on the site, has similar features. In fact, the two scanners are virtually identical, except that the Pandigital version is white and the Kodak version is black. The main difference between the two is that the Kodak version comes with Kodak EasyShare software, which lets you manage your photos as well as turn them into photo mugs, photo books, and other products you can buy from the Kodak Gallery Web site.

Given that you can download the software from Kodak's site for free, this isn't enough of a difference to matter. Somewhat more important is that the Kodak version comes with a 2GB memory card instead of 1GB. Keep that in mind when you compare prices between the two models.

The only complaint I have with the PanScn05 is that the film adaptor is small enough to make it easy to lose. That's particularly troublesome when you consider that the best argument for getting the scanner is to give you an easy way to scan negatives. However, Pandigital says that if you lose the adaptor, you can get a new one for free, and without a shipping and handling charge, simply by calling and asking for it.

Note too that if you want to scan slides, they can't be mounted, which means that if they're in cardboard holders now, you have to carefully tear off the cardboard. Depending on how many slides you have, this could be a daunting task. And, of course, if you want to use the film as slides again, you'll have to remount them.

Fortunately, these issues are more in the realm of minor cautions than major problems, unless your main need is scanning slides. The Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 is a highly attractive option for casual photographers who want to scan prints, negatives, and an occasional slide easily, quickly, and without having to know anything about scanning beyond how to put the photo in the manual feed slot.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 with several other scanners side by side.

Pentagon: China military growing rapidly (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A Pentagon report says China's development of a new stealth fighter, an aircraft carrier and a record number of space launches over the past year puts it on pace to achieve its goal of building a modern, regionally focused military by 2020.

The report released Tuesday says Beijing has closed critical technological gaps, and is rapidly modernizing its military equipment, all with an eye toward preventing possible U.S. intervention in a conflict with Taiwan. It also warns that the military expansion could increasingly stretch to the western Pacific in a move to deny U.S. and allied access or movement there.

The Pentagon says the new stealth fighter along with longer range missiles could give Beijing the ability to strike regional air bases and other facilities.

Sarah Palin vs. Karl Rove: Is he right that she's thin-skinned?

GOP guru Karl Rove on Wednesday advised Sarah Palin to get 'a slightly thicker skin' if she intends to run for president. It's Round 3 of 'The Battle of the Fox News Contributors.'

Is Sarah Palin too sensitive? That?s what GOP guru Karl Rove said Wednesday to Greta van Susteren on Fox News.

The exact phrase he used was ?thin-skinned.?

?I would just recommend that she get a slightly thicker skin, because if she?s got this thin a skin now ... how is she going to react if she does get into the campaign and gets the scrutiny that every presidential candidate gets?? said Mr. Rove.

First, a little background.

Last weekend, the aforementioned Rove said he believed the ex-governor of Alaska would announce a presidential bid around Labor Day. Ms. Palin's schedule ? unveiling a film about herself in Iowa, visiting the Iowa State Fair, addressing a big Sept. 3 Tea Party Iowa rally ? was that of a candidate, not a celebrity, said the former Bush political adviser.

For some reason this made Palin unhappy. She fired back in a message posted on her PAC website, denying that she plans to reveal her plans over Labor Day weekend.

?Any professional pundit claiming to have ?inside information? regarding Governor Palin?s personal decision is not only wrong but their comments are specifically intended to mislead the American people,? said the message.

OK ? first off, ?professional pundit? is an oxymoron. The word for an amateur pundit is ?blowhard.? Second, Rove clearly did not claim any inside information. He was making a prediction. And as to willfully misleading the American people ? that?s a little harsh, isn?t it? Maybe Rove has some plan whereby predicting a Palin presidential bid will embarrass her and boost some other candidate, but we think that?s a bank shot that?s a little complicated to pull off, frankly.

So yes, Palin, or whoever wrote the message for her, is being too thin-skinned in this instance. She should learn from the example of fellow tea party favorite Michele Bachmann, who generally stays on message and does not get riled even when folks are trying to rile her.

That said, Rove and Palin have a history, and now they appear locked in a genuine feud. They?re like Jerry Seinfeld and Newman, only they don?t appear in an old sitcom. We?ll call it ?The Battle of the Fox News Contributors.?

Rove in the past has said that Palin?s appearance on reality shows is a sign she lacks gravitas. Palin has said that Rove is the symbol of the GOP old guard against which she is going rogue.

It takes two to tangle, as grade school teachers across America will be reminding their charges this week. While Palin may have been thin-skinned, Rove seemed to be piling on. If you watch the full exchange from Wednesday you?ll see that Ms. Van Susteren kept trying to steer the conversation in the direction of ?aren?t-the-media-silly-for-focusing-on-this,? but Rove would not let up.

?If she?s not interested in being a candidate, why does she keep going back to Iowa?? he concluded.

Insight: Jobs exit opens door for nimble Apple rivals (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? The resignation of Apple Inc CEO Steve Jobs opens the door for rivals Samsung Electronics and HTC to battle for smartphone supremacy in salesrooms and courtrooms globally.

Jobs passed the reins to his right-hand man Tim Cook on Wednesday, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties.

Taiwanese group HTC, led by another well-known industry figure Peter Chou, is seen by many as the most direct competitor to Apple. It has seen sales surge in the last few quarters and has a reputation for innovative flair.

Samsung's fortunes are most tied to Apple, both as a competitor and supplier of components. The group also has a scale and an ability to react quickly that is rare in the sector.

Samsung's Galaxy range of smartphones and tablet computers running on Google's Android operating system are seen as the key competitor to Apple's iPhone and iPad, products which have changed the industry.

"Even before Steve Jobs' (resignation), Samsung was getting more and more optimistic that they can actually take on Apple in the smartphone arena," said Mark Newman, a former director of strategy at Samsung, where he worked for six years.

"The game is really now Samsung's to lose ... They are picking up market share because of the change in dynamics in the smartphone industry," added Newman, now a senior analyst for global memory and consumer electronics at Sanford C Bernstein.

BOOMING MARKET

Samsung this week unveiled four new cheaper smartphones targeting fast-growing emerging markets -- again setting it on a collision course with Apple, which sources say is readying a cheaper, 8 gigabyte iPhone.

Hong Won-pyo, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division, told his team this week he was confident Samsung could soon overtake Apple in the smartphone market soon, according to a person at the meeting. Hong was speaking just hours before Jobs made his announcement to quit.

Apple and Samsung now scrap for top spot in the smartphone market, having overtaken the market leader for the past decade, Finland's Nokia, in the second quarter. Samsung's smartphone sales soared more than 500 percent in the second quarter, easily eclipsing Apple's 142 percent growth, though Apple sold about 1 million more phones. Nokia sales fell 30 percent.

News of Jobs' move helped Samsung shares rise 2.4 percent in Seoul on Thursday. The broader Korean market was up 0.6 percent.

"Investors were concerned that Apple would encroach into Android's turf, but Jobs' exit offers opportunities for Samsung to expand its smartphone market share at a time when Nokia is struggling," said Jeon Nam-joong, a fund manager at Consus Asset Management, which owns shares in Samsung.

Samsung has already stormed past its Asian rivals. Its market value of around $110 billion is comfortably more than Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic combined -- though still only a third of Apple's size.

Both Samsung and Apple will face increasingly stiff competition from new rivals in China and Taiwan, however.

Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp, China's top two telecommunications equipment makers, are looking to storm the smartphone market after hitting traditional network gear market.

Taiwanese group HTC -- is seen by many as the only phone maker able to innovate like Apple and has quickly risen to become the fifth largest smartphone vendor globally -- could benefit the most in this arena from any erosion of Apple's dominance.

"HTC may fare better than Samsung, which is currently languishing with legal hassles regarding alleged patent infringement and injunctions in Europe," analyst Richard Windsor said in a research note.

LEGAL BATTLES

Samsung's strength has been in being fast and cheap to the market with everything from TVs to chips and phones. That has created tension with Apple, which has complained Samsung's Galaxy range copies its iPads and iPhones.

Samsung and Apple, along with many of the other players in the fast-growing mobile devices market, are now engaged in costly and acrimonious patent and copyright battles.

Just on Wednesday, Apple won a preliminary injunction in a Dutch court stopping Samsung from marketing three smartphone models in some European countries.

"It's difficult to gauge precisely what the impact will be as our relationship with Apple is very complicated and intertwined with so many parts of our business," said a senior executive at Samsung's general management division.

Bernstein's Newman agreed.

"It's a very complex relationship and I think that it's very important to note that not only are they competitors, fierce rivals in the market place, but they need each other. I would say that Apple needs Samsung more than Samsung needs Apple."

The South Korean conglomerate supplied Apple with about $5.7 billion in components last year, some 4 percent of its total sales, and the portion grew to 5.8 percent in the first-quarter, driven by booming iPad and iPhone sales, which Samsung supplies chips for.

Samsung may also move more aggressively in closing the gap in software, one of its weakest links. Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee recently asked the firm's top managers to come up with various measures including M&A to raise its software prowess, according to South Korean media.

Lee, Korea's wealthiest man, is the second generation to run the sprawling Samsung empire which dominates the Korean corporate landscape. Like Jobs, Lee is seen as something of a visionary with an obsession for perfection. He once had a pile of substandard mobile phones piled up and burned in front of his employees to improve quality.

SONY LESSONS

While few expect Jobs' lesser role to imminently derail the Apple juggernaut, the history of Sony, a company once worshipped by Jobs, is worth remembering.

In the late 1970s, co-founder Akio Morita was firmly at the helm of the Japanese electronics innovator, wowing consumers and investors with its groundbreaking Walkman music player.

But as an aging Morita's influence waned, the fortunes of Sony also followed. It lost its cutting edge design and attitude and made a series of bad investments.

How far a once-innovative Sony had fallen behind was made clear when Jobs' Apple stole Sony's music player mantle with its iPod digital player in 2001.

Back in 2000, Sony's market value had been more than seven times Apple's. Today, Sony's market value is only one seventeenth of Jobs' creation.
