For many years? I lived with the beast of perfectionism. I had no clue? that this issue was not part of my character, but instead a dangerous approach to life that could wreck my well being. I by no means thought that perfectionism was one of the major issues why I was not able to find healing for my food related struggles.
In the world of a perfectionist ?sufficient? is unfathomable. According to perfectionist there is basically no such thing as a good enough relationship, a well enough home, a well enough weight, a adequate grade, a adequate dinner party or a adequate performance. Just about everything has to be exceptional or a perfectionist will have none of it.This is a very treacherous approach to life:
To begin with ?perfection? does not be present. Nearly everybody presents a distinctive ?ideal? and what?s perfect for me most likely are not perfect for you at all. Second, chasing after faultlessness can rob a person of contentment, relationships and a great many wonderful things and encounters which doesn?t match your ?perfect? package.
So if you are reaching for a flawless diet regime, you might never be content with anything short of starvation. If you happen to be solely happy with a really perfect physical exercise, you may rather do nothing at all. If you can?t fit into your number two skinny jeans, you will preferably stay at home, watch tv, eat and feel depressed.
Trust me, I?ve been there, and it?s really not a way to live. I realized along the way, after struggling with eating disorders and food addiction for several years, that ?persistence? is critical in breaking free from a food problem. At certain point I discovered that it was not very important precisely how I did some things, but instead that I got it done and that I stuck with it that broke the back of eating disorders.
I needed to come to a decision that my body was ?good enough? just the way it was (yes with excess weight)? to take care of it well and also have some fun.
I needed to make a decision that eating healthy and losing excess weight slowly was ?well enough?
I had to decide that going to the health and fitness center a handful of times each week and pacing myself was ?adequate?
I had to accept the truth that I am going to slip-up, but that making mistakes was still being ?sufficient??
In the end I came to the shocking conclusion that reaching for perfection can keep me from consistency forever. The two don?t ever meet. So if I honestly desired to break free from eating disorders, I had to forget about the idea of perfection, and figure out how to settle for ?good enough?.
As a Christian you?ve probably bought into the lie that flawlessness equals holiness. This is simply not true..
God commandsHoliness which plays out as a pursuit for excellence, which is also in some instances translated as perfection. However, there is a major difference: The goal of Holiness will be to please God and to become more like Him. This pursuit brings forth Love, Peace, Joy and every other part of the Fruit of the Spirit within our lives. This pursuit will conclude in heaven, and it brings long-term change in us on this earth. Also: Holiness can merely be performed via the power of the Holy Spirit in us. We can?t do it ourselves.
In the Hunt for Perfection the goal is mainly pleasing ourselves and impressing others. This quest brings forth obsession, neurosis and anxiousness in our lives. Additionally: Perfection is something we strive for in our own power, which is at best limited and flawed, and so the outcome is unclear and the objective not possible.
So, you may try and do everything as near to perfect as possible but still be far from Holy.
In my program for ladies battling with food related issues, I dedicate a whole week telling you how perfectionism links to food addiction. I additionally talk honestly about my own , personal battle in this area and share guidelines to help you break free from seeking something which doesn?t exist.
I motivate women to take 12 months, clear away perfectionism, replace it with consistency, and see the difference it could bring to their lives.
