Hackers steal 10000 business passwords and accounts each week

HACKERS are stealing almost 10,000 Australian business passwords and accounts each week. More and more Australians fall victim to cyber crime.?The cyber harvest comes as the Australian government research to be released today shows nearly one in six Australians are victims of identity theft or know someone who has fallen prey in the past six months.?Nine in 10 people fear their identity will be stolen.


The findings will underpin a new National Identity Security Strategy between the federal and state governments. Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland said it was clear the community was worried about cyber crime.The Government last week introduced legislation to strengthen cyber security.

"As technology evolves and people undertake more business and transactions online the risk of identity theft increases," Mr McClelland said.?"In the last six months alone, Australia's Computer Emergency Response Team has alerted Australian businesses to more than a quarter of a million pieces of stolen information, such as passwords and account details, allowing them to take steps to protect their system and their customers."


Hackers use data mining techniques on social networking sites and other online forums to find the names of victims' children, their workplace and other personal information. An email is then sent to victims from an address that looks familiar. Once it is opened viruses and spyware are downloaded, leaving the financial and personal details of victims exposed.?The Sunday Mail revealed last week that a cyber-spying company was hacking into Queenslanders' emails and online conversations.?
